How It Works - Home Standby Generator:

A backup generator senses power outages just seconds after they occur and automatically kicks. A residential backup generator is installed outside your home and is installed to run off your homes natural gasses or propane fuel. When active, these gasses provide power directly to your home’s electrical systems. Once the utility power systems in your area are properly functioning, the generator then automatically powers off and goes back into standby in case of another emergency.
